Heartland has a unique relationship with Southwest Baptist Church in many areas - one of which is the Adoptive Family Program. Families in the church have "adopted" students from Heartland - their goal is to be an encouragement, to pray for them, to provide an occasional home-cooked meal, to help the student feel at home while attending Heartland, and to be a help and a blessing to the students during the school year. Hopefully, the program works both ways in that the students will be a blessing in return. This program has been a help in reducing homesickness and the dropout rate.
Generally, first year students are assigned to "adoptive" families, but many of the participating families continue to be "adoptive" parents to students from previous years also.
